Installations
What defines an 'installation' as opposed to a 'performance'?
This can perhaps best be explained by the level of performative engagement required by the artist or situation. Or if you prefer, the nature of 'presence' or participation expected. I would therefore define installations, in my own experience, as those events at which your physical presence is required but beyond that not much is asked of you: you are not especially asked to do anything other than stand / sit / lie as required and not do more than briefly hold basic poses or perform more than basic tasks.
Over time, as my confidence and experience have grown, I have moved further into what I would describe as performance, which often requires pre-event preparation in the form of workshops and rehearsals. But none of these explanations fully fits with every performance or installation I have been involved in.
